These loans, which you do not have to pay back as long as you live in your home, now carry high fees that can equal 4% of the home's value. This is in addition to many of the closing costs of a traditional mortgage. The competition is heating up and should bring fees down by thousands of dollars within the next few years. Do you choose to sue in small claims court an individual or company for money owed you? You can avoid the expense of a lawyer, but be aware of the six most common mistakes: * Confusing unfair with illegal * Being unable to explain how you calculated the damages * Failing to properly serve the defendant * Rambling * Being impolite to the other party * Not having witnesses there on time and acting impartially You may need less than you think for retirement. Once you get out of the 55 - 64 age group, your expenses for housing, transportation, entertainment, apparel, food and alcohol decreases 30% to 46%. Only health care increases 23%. Get senior discounts at the Web site www.seniordiscounts.com. National Parks offer a lifetime Senior Pass for $10 and it lets you and everyone in your car into national parks, forests, recreation areas and monument grounds. Not-for-profit nursing homes generally provide better care than for-profit ones. Also, independently run nursing homes tend to offer better care than ones operated by chains. To find a good nursing home: Get a list of local homes and the name of the local ombudsman who investigates them.
