Compare earnings listed in the SSA statement that the government sends you each year around your birthday with income listed on W-2 forms in your tax records. Check for faulty calculations by using the SSA's formula which is available at www.socialsecurity.gov. Check for an incorrect address. You should suspect a problem if you fail to receive an annual statement. Check for wrong personal data such as incorrect last name relating to a marriage or divorce, also incorrect birth date. Check for missing benefits from a spouse. A table for determining the proportion of benifits to which surviving spouses are entitled is available at www.socialsecurity.gov/survivorplan/ifyou5.htm Have debt problems? Cut credit card interest, pay off credit cards with the smallest balances first, stop living off your home equity, if income drops then reduce spending also and negotiate reductions in fees. Identify emergency contacts on youe cell phone or PDA's with the acronym "ICE" which stands for " in case of emergency ". For multiple contacts, identify the contacts with numbers in the sequence that you want them contacted (i.e.: ICE-1, ICE-2, etc. ) Emergency workers check for this. Volunteering on a regular basis helps the volunteers as well as those in need. Studies show that volunteering can significantly improve physical and mental health.
